Saturday Recap
Van Gerwen was in a destructive mood in his first performance of the 2016 World Matchplay, devouring Caven without breaking a sweat on a hot night in Blackpool.
Three Dart Analyst compared the combatants before they stepped up to the oche:

It was a mismatch from the opening exchanges, as the Dutch genius moved like lightning. Caven was a rabbit in the headlights as the legs flew by him, powerless to make a dent in his opponent's game.
It was 5-0 before Caven blinked, as the reigning champion threw world-class darts at every individual visit.
The kingpin from the Netherlands impressed sports journalist Darren Plant:

Caden looked shell-shocked as Van Gerwen showed no mercy, and the whitewash was over in double-quick time.
Three Dart Analyst provided the vital stats at the end of the encounter as Van Gerwen maintained an enormous three-dart average of 105.85:

Payne surprisingly fell out of the competition at the first hurdle, underperforming against Thornton. The starlet failed to settle early, as The Thorn took full advantage to win 10-7.
The Scot rushed to a two-leg lead, as he threw a 180 three-dart maximum before his young opponent sprung from his trap.
The starlet—nicknamed The Maximum—finally started a recovery when he pegged back Thornton, driving the score to 4-4. Payne then temporarily moved ahead in the tie before the Scotsman found a higher gear.

Thornton opened the 11th leg with back-to-back 180 finishes and never looked back.
The Kent-born youngster threatened to make a second comeback on the night, but Thornton was positioned too close to victory.
The three-time major collected the win by three legs and progresses to the next phase.

Anderson was in fine fettle, controlling his match against Van Der Voort.
The 40-year-old Dutchman grabbed the opening leg, but the Aussie quickly found his rhythm at the oche. Anderson raced to a 3-1 lead as Van Der Voort lagged behind, and the Netherlands player simply didn't have the stamina needed for the job.
The Original soon made it 6-4 and added two quick legs to pull away from his opponent.Van De Voort had no response to the increase of pace and surrendered to a 10-4 defeat.
The final match of the night saw an entertaining clash between rising star Van de Pas and St Helens stalwart Chisnall.
Chizzy captured the victory after a skillful performance full of guile and tempo in a tough encounter.

Big Ben recovered well in the middle of the match as Chizzy claimed a 4-2 lead. The Dutch player clawed back to 4-5 before catching the 35-year-old to make it 7-7. Chisnall looked shocked as the crowd reacted but responded to claim a one-leg advantage.
The gruelling battle stretched to 9-7 in Chisnall's favour, and the star player found enough to scrape over the line with one last push. Chizzy will now face Thornton in the next round of action.
Van Gerwen appears to be in the form of his life, and the long form of the game over 10 legs suits his wrecking-ball approach.
He beat Caden psychologically just minutes into the battle, and it will be impossible to stop the Dutchman if he maintains his standard.
The field has dramatically improved in the past two years across the board in world darts, but no one can match Van Gerwen when he is motivated.
